We reflect on Good Friday by looking at the reason for this significant day: The Crucifixion of Jesus. The World may look at the naming of this day as a Contradiction. Can anything good come from such a horrifying death, that is, death on a cross? What exactly is “Good” about Good Friday?
Why did Jesus have to suffer?
Isaiah 53:5: But He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace and with his wounds we are healed.
The Prophet Isaiah reveals to us early in the scriptures, a picture of the suffering Jesus Christ was meant to undergo. See the Saviour with his wounds. The nails in his hands and feet, His crown of thorns, the entirety of His suffering; all the consequences of our iniquity. Is the weight of sin so great that He must suffer in such a gruesome manner and on our accord? The answer, a resounding Yes. The punishment for our sin was inflicted on him and the benefits, reconciliation with God, reaped by those who have believed in the LORD and repented of their sin. By his wounds we are healed. Healed from what? Sin and it’s disease-like effects. Because of this we might die to sin and live for righteousness (1 Peter 2:24)
Made to be sin
2 Corinthians 5:21: For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God
Hear the crowds shout for The Saviour to be crucified. Jesus Christ carried a charge against His name that was not His to carry: Guilty. He bore upon Himself the sins of the world. But He did not become as a sinner instead He was made sin by imputation. By bearing the sins of the world upon Himself He made Himself answerable to God. He suffered the cost. And even through His imputation this remains true, “He knew no sin.” The spotless lamb of God remained sinless. He knew the corruptible nature of the heart of man but he himself was exempt from the effects of this.
To be endowed with the righteousness of God for a debt we did not pay is the greatest expression of love. There is nothing that man could have done to earn the righteousness of God. No price could have been met but for death on the Cross by the Lamb of God.
That we might become the righteousness of God
Condemned to death and declared separate from God, the death of The Saviour draws us near to God, grants to us the undeserving gift of Salvation from sin and declares us eternally his. What manner of Love is this!
